Hand-Operated AC/DC Generator
Demonstrate how alternating and direct current work with the Hand-Operated AC/DC Generator. The user rotates a wheel that turns a wire coil in a strong magnetic field created by two magnets. This creates an electric current in the coil that flows into a small circuit. The current can flow in either alternating or direct current with the use of a commutator. LEDs in the circuit light up according to the type of current produced.
Concepts such as electromagnetic induction, Lenz's Law, direct current, alternating current, energy conversion, diodes and commutators can all be discussed using this educational generator. Included in the instruction manual are assembly instructions; demonstration instructions; theory on electromagnetic induction, Lenz's Law and generators; and a STEM section describing how generators are used in technology. The Hand-Operated AC/DC Generator is a terrific instrument that engages students with electromagnetism.
